Building Inclusive Learning Technologies series helps you design EdTech products that more learners can access, use, trust, and benefit from. The series frames inclusion, accessibility, and usability testing as practical product design capabilities rather than separate compliance or theory topics.

Across the series, you will learn how exclusion happens in learning technologies, how to identify barriers across diverse African contexts, and how to make better product decisions with and for learners. The courses move from understanding inclusion, to applying accessibility standards and practices, to testing real product experiences with users. Together, they support you to build learning technologies that are more relevant, usable, safe, accessible, and responsive to learner diversity.

Inclusive EdTech for Diverse Learners

This course introduces inclusion as a practical and strategic part of EdTech design. You will explore who may be excluded from learning technologies, why exclusion happens, and how design choices can either create or reduce barriers for diverse learners.

The course focuses on inclusion across real learning conditions, especially in African contexts where learners may face barriers related to language, connectivity, disability, safety, gender, culture, device access, time, cost, and learning environment. You are encouraged to move beyond the idea that access alone means inclusion, and to think more deeply about whether learners can understand, participate, feel represented, and learn with dignity.

  • Discuss how barriers, lived realities, and unequal starting points shape how different learners experience EdTech products and services.
  • Explain what inclusion means in EdTech and why it matters for access, participation, safety, belonging, relevance, and impact.
  • Apply inclusive design principles to review and improve EdTech products, features, and learning experiences.
  • Evaluate whether products, content, and team practices support or limit accessibility, language equity, representation, safety, and inclusive participation.
  • Develop an inclusion audit and a realistic action plan for improving their own product, service, or organization.

Principles of Accessibility for EdTech Design

This course introduces accessibility as a practical and strategic part of EdTech product design. You will learn how accessibility supports learners with diverse visual, hearing, motor, cognitive, language, and contextual needs, while also improving usability and product quality for many more users.

The course covers common accessibility barriers in digital learning products, how to diagnose and improve them, and how to use standards, documentation, testing practices, and product workflows to support more consistent accessibility. It helps you understand how products may have issues with access and usability, how to diagnose and fix potential issues, and how to design more accessible products for diverse users across African contexts. It focuses on best practices as well as standards and documentation, and practical reasons or benefits to adopt accessibility initiatives.

Usability Testing for Learner-Centered EdTech (coming Q3 2026)

This course introduces usability testing as a practical method for making better EdTech product decisions with users. You will learn how to observe learner interaction, identify friction points, and translate user evidence into product improvements.

The course guides you through the full usability testing process: deciding what to test, understanding how users interact with a product, planning and running a test, analyzing findings, and prioritizing improvements. It emphasizes usability testing in realistic learning contexts, including constraints such as low bandwidth, shared devices, different language levels, varied confidence with technology, and diverse learner needs.

  • Explain how usability testing supports learner-centered EdTech product decisions.
  • Distinguish usability testing from broader user research, user testing, analytics, surveys, interviews, heuristic evaluation, accessibility evaluation, and learning outcomes evaluation.
  • Develop focused usability questions and realistic task prompts for an EdTech product or prototype.
  • Conduct a basic think-aloud usability testing session using neutral facilitation and ethical consent practices.
  • Document usability observations using evidence from what users say, do, think, and feel.
  • Analyze usability observations to identify patterns, prioritize issues, summarize findings, and recommend product improvements.
